Science

What We Did Today
Students got back the Cell Processes quiz. They then got the study guide for the Unit Test on cells and worked on it until the end of class.
Homework
Complete the study guide.

Cell Unit

What makes something alive? List the characteristics of all living things.

Give three examples of living and non-living things.

What is the cell theory?

Organisms can either be single celled such as ___________ or ___________or multi-cellular such as ____________, ____________ or _____________.

What to all cells need?

Both plant and animals are made up of many organelles. Plant cell have some organelles that animal cell do not.  Describe the function of the following organelles:

·         Cell wall:

·         Chloroplasts:

·         Vacuole (how/why is it different in a plant cell?):

Plant and animal cells share many of the same organelles and the functions are similar. Describe the function of the following:

  • Nucleus:
  • Ribosome:
  • Mitochondria:
  • Cell membrane:

Describe the process of diffusion.

What is osmosis?

The two above processes are an example of passive transport because ______________.

What is active transport?

Plants store a large amount of water in their vacuoles to undergo photosynthesis. They also store energy throughout the plant in the form of sugar. What parts of the plant can you find stored energy?

What happens during photosynthesis? Describe where and how it occurs.

All energy used by living things comes from the ______________.

Define the following terms and give a few examples of each.

  • Producer:
  • Consumer:
  • Decomposer:
Why and how do cells divide?

Is this true for single-celled and multi-cellular organisms?

Discussion Starters
Where do we get our energy?
